 The Year In Cats

We had a few exciting cat moments in 2009.

Our neighbors who own Buddy acquired a new kitten named - Pumpkin, Chubby, or Lil Buddy, depending upon whom you ask.  This is one of the sweetest, affectionate, cute cats I've known.    He is absolutely darling!

Someone got a new puppy, a mini-pinscher named Kahuna.

There were hummingbirds at the feeder, too.

Other new cats appeared in the neighborhood.   One of
them is named 'Kona'.

Good night, and have a good New Year...

Buddy

This recent Independence Day was really fun for me.  My younger son, Chris, was leaving for vacation with his dad the next morning, so he stayed to see the fireworks with me that night.  We can see them from my living room window, but for a better view I step out to the walkway out in front of the second story apartments of the building.  Don't have to go far since there are only 6 apartments in the whole building.

I also like to stay close to home where I can reassure my cat, Wild Thing, when the loud noises start up.  In the past, she has run from room to room looking pretty scared when fireworks are booming outside.

We were surprised when Buddy, our neighbor's cat, came up the stairs to play when we stepped outside the front door about 9:00 pm.  They didn't seem to bother him at all.  In fact, he was so funny, it made the night much more fun!  First, he was running back and forth attacking bugs on the walls and walkway.  He also likes to stretch by putting his front paws up on the metal bars and railing along the 2nd floor.  He has almost fallen through before.  If he did, he would just land in the juniper bushes below, so I think he'd have a soft landing.

Then he attacked my ankle.  When I let out a somewhat loud "No", he did back away from my ankle, looking back at me with a look that said, "Aw, she's no fun...".  Unfortunately, he's not the first male to form that attitude about me, but that's another story.

Between watching out for Buddy's claws and looking toward the sky to see the fireworks, the time went by fast.  It seemed to be another usual Santa Barbara fireworks show, so I don't think I missed anything too amazing.

The dogs were barking all over town, of course, and Wild Thing just stayed on my bed throughout the whole thing.  I hope it was a safe, fun 4th for you, too!

U.S. Supreme Court to rule on animal cruelty law - Reuters

~ By James Vicini

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court said on Monday that it would decide whether a federal law that makes it a crime to sell videos of animals being tortured or killed violates constitutional free-speech rights.

The high court agreed to hear a U.S. Justice Department appeal defending the 1999 animal cruelty law after it was struck down for infringing free-speech protections.

A U.S. appeals court declared the law unconstitutional and overturned the conviction of a Virginia man, Robert Stevens, who sold three videos of pit bulls fighting each other and attacking hogs and wild boars. His conviction in 2005 was the first in the country under the law. Stevens had been sentenced to 37 months in prison. By a 10-3 vote, the appeals court rejected the government's argument that, for the first time in more than 25 years, there was a new category of speech not covered by constitutional free-speech protections. Usually, videos and other depictions are protected as free speech, even if they show abhorrent conduct.

In 1982, the Supreme Court last made an exception and ruled that free-speech rights do not apply to certain sexual depictions of children. Congress adopted the law in 1999 in an attempt to stop people from profiting by the interstate sale of depictions of unlawful torture and killing of animals. Laws in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, along with various other federal laws, already prohibit animal cruelty.

Justice Department attorneys said Congress, in adopting the law, also is aimed at videos in which women in high-heeled shoes crush small animals as a type of sexual fetish, sought to stop a unique and reprehensible type of criminal conduct. They told the Supreme Court that the animal cruelty law should be upheld just like child pornography laws.

The justices are expected to hear arguments in the case and then rule during their upcoming term that begins in October.

From Lulublue - It is hard to believe that such behavior and these videos would be considered an item worthy of protection under US law.  This cruelty is so far removed from my comprehension that it is truly stuff from hell as far as I'm concerned.  The punishment is quite appropriate.  But I would hope that the criminal would actually feel the horror that any caring, loving soul feels at the recognition of what he's done.  This is the stuff that makes the caring, optimistic, resilient person that I tend to be just want to turn over in hopelessness and disgust and give up.  But then I get angry and fight back.

Wild Turkeys of Goleta & Cat Lore

Local birdwatchers report a group of wild turkeys roaming around in Goleta, California.  They drive the local dogs crazy!  No comments from the local cats.

This is a new one on me - but my 13 year old informed me that when a cat sleeps with a paw covering it's face, it is a sign of rain on the way.  He learned that from my sister-in-law and she knows cats!  The above photo of Wild Thing shows that it can be difficult to even tell if certain cats have a face when the curl up to sleep.  She does have the most beautiful, soft tortoise-shell color coat.

And here's Buddy, the cat we thought was a stray that showed up a few months ago.  (I posted about the events, too.  Check the 'History'.)  Buddy frequently appears outside my window.  He climbs up the tree alongside the laundry room and gets onto the small roof which happens to be outside my bedroom window.  I try to ignore him (not an easy thing to do with that adorable face) because if encouraged, he will show up at 3:30 am.  I DID rescue him from out there, through the window, when the helicopters were fighting the fires and re-fueling closeby (scary) and when it was raining 2 days ago (wet).
